Campus Hamburg 2027 Designed For You

From spring 2026 to summer 2027, Campus Hamburg is getting a major upgrade. We are redesigning key areas of KLU - right in the middle of ongoing campus life.
Why? We are investing in space for more students and in flexible options for studying, meeting friends, and spending time between classes. At the same time, we are making sure KLU stays a modern, high-quality place to learn and connect. Last but not least, we aim at opening the campus to our home quarter - the HafenCity.

What's Changing?
A new library with a café on the ground floor will become the heart of campus life. On top, this will open up the campus to the HafenCity community - making it an even more lively place to be. You can look forward to a new gym, an upgraded student lounge, and more flexible learning and study spaces.
Not everything will be perfect during construction - there will be sometimes noise and temporary changes. But we planned carefully to keep your studies running smoothly and to avoid disruptions to lectures and exams. KLU will share regular updates about the renovations and offer alternatives for any possible disruptions.
You graduate before everything is finished? You will literally see your university growing, not only in community size but first of all in terms of impact. You are part of this transition - with your feedback you help shaping KLU for future generations.
Thank you for your patience during this process.

Highlights of Campus Hamburg 2027
Library & Campus Café
New meet & study zone
The new library with an integrated campus café is at the heart of the "Campus Hamburg 2027" project. A place to study, collaborate, or simply take a break between classes. Look forward to combining two of the best things a university has to offer: knowledge & coffee!
The area will also bring together key services such as the Library Info Desk and the Student Info Point, making it easier than ever to find support in one central location.
A new outdoor terrace on the north side will create additional space to relax and connect and is an invitation to our neighborhood in the HafenCity to explore KLU. The café area can be opened up to the foyer, allowing flexible use for larger events.
Library and campus café will replace the current rooms Ground Floor Lecture 1 to 3.

New Focus Space
A new silent study zone will be created on the first floor, offering a dedicated area for distraction-free study. Located close to the library, just like before, it will replace the individual workspaces from the lower level of the former library, but in an improved way. The new space will be larger, more modern, and provide more desks, giving you better access to quiet study spots when you need full concentration.
This is your go-to place when you want to work without interruptions, prepare for exams, or simply focus in a calm environment.
Modernized Gym & Student Lounge
The gym will move to the lower basement, where it will be upgraded with modern changing rooms and showers. This creates a more functional and comfortable space for working out as part of your daily campus routine.
Right next to it, a new slightly larger Student Lounge will be created. It will include a small kitchenette and bar area, making it a practical place to relax, eat, or spend time with others between classes.
Most of the current Student Lounge on the second floor will serve as space for new breakout rooms. A smaller part will continue to serve as a tea kitchen and supply point for students.

More & Modernized Lecture Rooms
The former large catering kitchen on the ground floor will be completely removed to make space for new teaching facilities. In total, 10 new, modern lecture rooms will be created across the campus:
- 6 on the ground floor
- 1 on the first floor
- 3 on the second floor
Some of these rooms will be flexibly connected through folding walls, allowing them to be adapted for different class sizes and teaching formats.
In addition, there will be new breakout rooms designed for group work, discussions, and collaborative learning.
More Space for Events & Campus Life
Especially on the ground floor, spaces that were previously separated will be brought together. In the future, the Foyer, Golden Egg, and campus café can be used as one large, connected event area.
This creates much more flexibility for hosting events - whether it's guest lectures, student initiatives, or larger community gatherings - and allows more than 700 people to come together at the same time.
For students, this means more opportunities to take part in events directly on campus and experience a more active and connected campus life.
